Virtual Internships in Project Management
This is a pilot initiative as a response to the COVID-19 crisis. The crisis has affected the project management jobs market and, as countries around the world begin to recover from the crisis, it is likely there will be unprecedented demand for Project Management. Organisations face new issues around social sustainability and a need to innovate, although there are risks in taking on new staff in a time of economic uncertainty. On the other hand, well-qualified students are leaving university with limited opportunities for employment and face difficulty in gaining experience that will be essential for a career in Project Management. There are also experienced project managers seeking new experience as a step towards changing the industry they work in.
The RPM Team are collaborating with the Association for Project Management, the UK Major Projects Authority and a selection of UK universities to develop a Virtual Project Management Internship Scheme.
The Scheme is currently in the pilot stage. Virtual Internships will typically be for 2-3months, undertaken entirely remotely and will not attract financial reward. Further details can be found at APM Careers.
Recent graduates looking for a Virtual Internship can upload their CV to the APM Job Site with a highlight stating they are ‘Seeking Virtual Internship’. In addition, the APM Job Site can be searched for Virtual Intern opportunities.
Organisations that could offer a Virtual Internship in Project Management, can advertise the opportunity on the APM Job Site. The APM Job Site can also be used to search for potential candidates who have uploaded their CVs with a highlight of ‘Seeking Virtual Internship’. A template can be found here:

Sochitel
Opportunities for Virtual Internship with Sochitel
Company overview. Sochitel is a fast growing, digital distribution platform facilitating the supply and distribution of digital services. Sochitel delivers virtual mobile telephone airtime, data top ups and bill payments across borders via a single point API. Sochitel is headquarterd in London with an extended footprint in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, South Africa, and Bangladesh.
Project environment. At any one time, Sochitel will be delivering over ten projects; accordingly, it is in the process of growing its portfolio and project management capabilities. Current projects range from onboarding new airtime suppliers to integrating African television streaming services. Projects tend to be fast-moving and will range in time from 3 weeks to 3 months; as such there is the opportunity to see projects from inception to completion during an internship.
Outputs from the internship. Interns will be required to:
· Estimate and plan projects in conjunction with functional leads.
· Produce project plans and schedules.
· Track project deliverables.
· Evaluate and communicate the performance of projects in delivery.
· Evaluate project benefits against forecasts.
· Develop Sochitel’s project management capability.
· Depending on ability, interns may be assigned as the project manager for a project(s).
